Q&A
What was your biggest success as a teacher?
In the summer of 2014, a large influx of minors crossing the Mexican border changed the population of my classes. Some of them became my ESOL students and presented serious challenges. Indigenous languages illiteracy. Post-traumatic stress disorder. Severe anxiety. The obstacles to learning were real. And It was heartbreaking to see there were no systems in place for my students. So I began to research what other school districts around the country were doing. Partnering with my TFA mentor, BFF, and business partner Dido Balla (Miami, ‘11), we created Newcomers Center.
Newcomers Center was designed to address the needs of newly-arrived students facing a dual problem: English and indigenous language illiteracy. After lots of advocacy and a deep dive analysis of the situation, we saw students’ academic performance and mental wellness significantly improve as a result. The school received a brand new computer lab, free on-site health screenings, donated uniforms, and funds to host after school tutoring.
What would you tell someone thinking about joining the Corps?
We need teachers who not only look like the students we serve, but understand them as well. I would tell someone thinking about becoming a corps member to bring your authentic self to the classroom everyday. Listen to our children and seek understanding. Never take anything a child says about you personally. If you’re truly thinking about joining the corps, follow your heart. You’re needed now more than ever before.
