Jennifer Efflandt

Executive Director of Multilingual Learners

Dallas-Fort Worth '09

As a first-generation college student and proud Brown graduate, Jennifer Efflandt had the opportunity to live out the American dream that her parents had hoped for when they emigrated to the U.S. from Guatemala.

After joining the corps, Jennifer saw the many injustices facing others who shared her family’s legal, racial identity, and socioeconomic status for the first time. Today, Jennifer is committed to advocating for vulnerable populations and works relentlessly to help ensure all students receive the education they deserve, regardless of race, socioeconomic background, immigration status, or ELL status.

Q & A

What led you to apply to Teach For America?

I first learned about Teach For America during my senior year at Brown. The decision to apply to TFA was easy—I loved the idea of going somewhere new, giving back, and sharing my passion for learning with others. When I joined TFA, I thought I would complete my two years of service before going to medical school, but my experience in Dallas changed my life trajectory completely.

How have you been able to utilize the TFA network after the corps?

I work with a lot of educators who are TFA alumni. It is always great to meet fellow alumni in my field because we have a shared sense of mission and values. I have remained connected with TFA Rhode Island and TFA Dallas through emails and events, and I love learning about what other TFAs are up to.

How was the corps a catalyst for your personal transformation?

The work I did with TFA really changed my life, and I am so proud that I have been able to bring the same values and impetus for change I learned in TFA back home to improve my community!
