Ge’ron Tatum

Executive Director, Teach For America Greater New Orleans

Ge'ron Tatum

Ge’ron Tatum is a lifelong learner who developed his passion for education and equity at a young age as a student in Louisiana public schools. With deep roots in the Acadiana region of Louisiana, he has made it his life's mission to fight for educational equity for students and families from neighborhoods just like his. Over the past 15 years, Tatum has had the opportunity to teach students, coach teachers, lead teams, and develop some of the city’s most dynamic leaders.

Tatum obtained degrees in education and psychology from Lincoln University in Missouri. From there, he began his education career as a teacher at one of the lowest performing schools in the Kansas City Public Schools. Throughout his two years there, his students grew more than any other grade level in the school, which ultimately helped the school reach academic progress goals that had not been met for the previous five years.

While in Missouri, Tatum served as a math teacher at Imagine Renaissance Academy and a grade level and content chair at KIPP Endeavor Academy before returning to his roots in Louisiana. In 2014, his career in New Orleans began as the assistant principal of KIPP McDonogh 15 School for the Creative Arts. He went on to serve as the middle school principal of Phillis Wheatley Community School in 2016. After leading the Wheatley community through the challenges and inequities highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Tatum saw the urgent need for innovative, community-centered leadership at all levels of the education system. His dedication to leadership development led him to expand his influence and impact by joining Teach For America Greater New Orleans as Executive Director in 2021.

Tatum is the proud father of two amazing children, Ty and L.A., both students in New Orleans Public Schools, who have inspired him to be a spark that reignites the urgent need to build an education system that serves every student in Greater New Orleans. While Tatum’s commitment to developing leaders for educational excellence and equity is fueled by his own experiences, his desire to be a change agent in the Greater New Orleans educational landscape is grounded in the simple belief that all children, no matter their backgrounds or circumstances, deserve access to the opportunities and support they need to attain their goals and become the leaders they are destined to be.
