Erin Stauber

K-1 Instructional Coach

Greater Delta: Mississippi & Arkansas '05

Erin Stauber is well-suited for her current role as a K-1 instructional coach in D.C. Public Schools. Following her time as a Mississippi Delta corps member, she was a founding teacher at her New York elementary school and quickly learned the importance of executing an effective curriculum. She took those skills to subsequent stops as a Fulbright Scholar in South Korea and a teacher in D.C. Public Schools, where she created and implemented a literacy curriculum at both places. Today, she uses this knowledge and instructional experience to coach teachers in best practices, utilizing data as a key resource in her work.

Q & A

What led you to apply to Teach For America?

Two of my older friends joined the corps, and they inspired me to apply with their stories and dedication. I knew grad school would be available after TFA and I was eager to serve. Also, going on an alternative student break to the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma helped me realize the impact that I could have and how much I could learn by serving in a rural region.

How was the corps a catalyst for your personal transformation?

The corps made me realize how much I don’t want to miss out on the tipping point. I want to be active in education to help bring about change. Coming out of college, I thought I’d be satisfied being an educator for a few years, then move on to another career. But education is my career, and I’m fulfilled knowing I am a small part of a larger movement to make a positive change.

What has your route been after the corps?

I taught at public and charter schools and could not leave the classroom until I felt like an excellent teacher. I am now an instructional coach working at Stanton Elementary in D.C. I am proud to work in a school actively working to provide an excellent public education to all students.

How has TFA prepared you skill-wise for this current challenge?

I’ve become much more analytical. Solving problems both analytically and creatively helps me support my students and teachers. I tackle problems and challenges with data and as much information as possible. Also, I imagine different outcomes and can plan to achieve those outcomes.
