Q & A

What led you to apply to Teach For America?

At Brown, I became more interested in education through volunteering at a local bilingual elementary school. The plan had always been to move internationally then apply to law school after graduation. Once I learned about the corps, however, I saw how the experience could fit into my career goals—I had no idea how much it would change my life

How was the corps a catalyst for your own personal transformation?

Teach For America gave me the opportunity to teach and work with students who would change my life and change my perspective on equity and justice. As a result, I changed my career path and now help support students in underserved communities access the highest levels of education so one day they can lead and transform the leadership of this country.

Is there something about being a corps member that uniquely prepared you to be a leader?

The successes and challenges my students and I faced in the classroom set me up for more success than any other role I could have imagined. As a 22 to 24-year-old teacher, I was the only one of my peers directly responsible for someone else’s future, including my own professional development. That required initiative helped me grow and helped me seek out resources to support my learning.
