Q & A

Was applying to Teach For America an easy or difficult decision? What were some of the factors you were weighing?

Being a first-generation student who also switched majors, I was a little behind in figuring out what I wanted to do after college. But, I knew I wanted to give back to communities similar to one I grew up in. I knew I could serve as a positive role model, especially to young men and those from single-parent homes who didn’t have a direct path to college.

Do you believe the corps was a catalyst for personal transformation?

I think the process of teaching challenged my morals and belief systems on a daily basis. It made me more of a change agent, and I truly believe that we need to be the change we want to see in the world. We must confront the injustices we see in the moment.

Describe the role TFA has played in the development of your career?

Teaching fundamentally challenged my pre-established beliefs and made me a better person for it. It taught me that problems in education are fixable and worth fighting for. I may not always be in the education field, but I will always be an educator.
