Liberty Home Guard (LHG) offers an extensive suite of add-on home warranty coverage options alongside comprehensive plans to match your home’s specific needs.

LHG is fairly new to the industry, having opened its doors in 2017. The company has quickly built a reputation for excellent customer service, which we confirmed compared to other home warranty companies and by reading customer reviews on consumer review sites such as the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and Trustpilot.

We reviewed LHG’s coverage plans, read through its sample contract and tested its customer service to determine whether to include it on our list of the best home warranty companies. After careful analysis and rating against our in-house review standards, LHG made the cut.

Our thoughts on Liberty Home Guard

Liberty Home Guard scored 4.5 out of 5 stars in our rating system. It scored well in the coverage and reputation sections of our review standards. However, it lost points in the extra features section.

What we like

We like Liberty Home Guard’s extensive list of add-ons and convenient customer service tools. We found that LHG is one of the few home warranty companies that provide a 24/7 online chat tool. We used the tool while secret shopping, and we were connected with an LHG representative in less than two minutes.

Another plus is that LHG provides coverage in all 50 states — very few home warranty providers do the same. If you own rental properties or need to move across the country, you can keep your home warranty protection from LHG regardless of your location.

LHG also offers good coverage caps and a lengthy workmanship guarantee. It provides a $2,000 coverage limit for most covered items. In addition, LHG provides a 60-day workmanship guarantee for all completed repairs. Most home warranties offer a 30-day guarantee.

Additionally, we read through Liberty Home Guard customer reviews and found that most customers experienced friendly and helpful service from representatives, which aligned with our experience contacting customer service. 

What we don’t like

While Liberty Home Guard provides generous coverage caps for most covered items, it limits electrical and plumbing systems to $250 per claim within the first 90 days of sign-up. After 90 days, LHG increases the electrical and plumbing limit to $500, which is still significantly lower than its standard $2,000 coverage limit.

Another downside worth mentioning is LHG’s service call fee structure. When you pull a quote, the company doesn’t display its service call fee options. Instead, it assigns the fee after you purchase a home warranty plan. We called an LHG representative and confirmed that the service call fee ranges from $65 to $125 per claim.

Additionally, LHG charges extra for pro-grade appliance protection. Other home warranties I’ve researched cover high-end appliances without charging extra per month.

Other top-ranking home warranty companies, such as 2-10 Home Buyers Warranty and American Home Shield, offer fewer add-ons but more comprehensive standard coverage and perks.

Liberty Home Guard lists several factors in its sample contract that affect your home warranty coverage, such as its workmanship guarantee and per-item coverage caps. Here is an overview of each:

Coverage exclusions

I read LHG’s sample contract and found it has the same standard coverage exclusions other home warranty companies have. For instance, LHG will not cover items with preexisting conditions. Some other coverage exclusions we noted in the company’s fine print were routine maintenance; rust, corrosion or sediment damage; chimneys; cosmetic defects; refrigerant recovery; and accidents caused by fire and water damage.

Quotes and pricing 

Liberty Home Guard prices its home protection plans competitively. We used a 2,300-square-foot, single-family home in South Carolina to request plan and pricing information for the table below. There were multiple windows where we had to enter personal information to obtain a quote, such as a full name, phone number and home address. After filling out all the requested info, LHG displayed pricing information for each plan option.

LHG does not display your service call fee after it generates a quote, so we called an LHG representative to confirm the fee. The representative stated that LHG charges between $65 and $125. “Your final price depends on the size and type of your home, plus your location,” the representative said.

The quote displayed the monthly price of a Liberty Home Guard plan. LHG also offers an annual premium option, ranging from $699 to $799. If you choose a yearly plan, LHG will give you two months of extra coverage plus a discount on your annual premium.

Customer thoughts

The BBB recently downgraded Liberty Home Guard’s A rating to N/R (“not rated”), and the company’s BBB page has been tagged with a Pattern of Complaint alert. The alert says the BBB noticed an increase in consumer complaints since 2023 “regarding the claims process, customer service and sales tactics.”

The Pattern of Complaint alert also mentions that LHG was contacted on March 11, 2024, to seek cooperation in resolving the issues.

LHG responded on March 12 by letting BBB know “that new software upgrades are currently being deployed which are intended to facilitate the communication regarding the scheduling of technician appointments and streamlining the claims process. In addition, the company reports that it is increasing its customer service headcount, and augmenting the training sessions and oversight for its sales representatives.”

LHG co-founders and co-CEOs Ben Joseph and David Moreno also issued a joint statement regarding the BBB alert and LHG’s commitment to its customers:

“Despite the BBB’s alert, our customer satisfaction levels remain by far the highest relative to our scale. Last month, we had the lowest percentage of customer cancellation requests in our entire history. On the BBB’s own platform, Liberty Home Guard has achieved a star rating of 4.5 out of 5 from nearly 2,500 reviews. For added context, the approximately 480 resolved complaints on Liberty Home Guard’s BBB profile equate to an extremely low fraction of a percentage relative to the size and scale of our total customer base.

“As we navigate this situation, which we believe will be resolved in time, we want to assure you that we remain committed to our customers and their satisfaction; they are the key stakeholders we orient all our efforts around.”

We found 13 1-star BBB reviews for LHG since January 1, 2024. During that same period, we found 90 5-star reviews.

In a 1-star review submitted on March 13, Geri L. wrote that the company was slow to send a technician, who then had to wait for authorization to complete the job. Additionally, many negative reviews reference low claims payments from LHG.

In a 5-star review submitted on March 8, Lynn B. wrote that her technician was professional and knowledgeable. Even though her range was ultimately not repairable and needed to be replaced, Lynn felt confident that the technician had checked every connection until he found the issue. Many other positive reviews mention the company’s quick and easy claims process.

How do you use your Liberty Home Guard coverage plan?

Before signing up for a Liberty Home Guard plan, we recommend understanding how a home warranty works. For example, you should read certain sections of the company’s sample contract to understand its exclusions and limitations. Below is a brief overview of how to maximize the value of your LHG coverage plan.

Read your sample contract

We highly suggest reading LHG’s sample contract before purchasing a plan because knowing what LHG covers and excludes can help you avoid a denied claim. The main sections you should focus on in LHG’s sample contract are the following:

  • Section B: This section distinguishes your responsibilities from LHG’s responsibilities. Familiarize yourself with this section to understand your policy’s duration and start date, amongst other things.
  • Section C: This section lists the different ways you can request service from LHG.
  • Sections D, E, F and G: These sections list all the coverage options LHG offers in the Appliance, Systems and Total Home Guard plans. These sections also highlight excluded item components.
  • Section H: This section highlights the limitations and exclusions LHG stipulates in its coverage plans. Pay special attention to this section to understand what the company classifies as an exclusion.
  • Section J: This section outlines LHG’s cancellation policy.

File a claim

Liberty Home Guard provides two claim-filing methods: a 24/7 claims phone number and an online portal. In its sample contract, LHG bolds the following statement: “LHG must be notified as soon as the malfunction is discovered and prior to the expiration of the Agreement Term and any bonus months.” Delaying notifying the company of an appliance or system breakdown could lead to claim denial.

After approving your claim, LHG will send an in-network service provider to your home within 48 business hours. However, the company’s sample contract states that these ranges are for claims submitted during normal business hours. If you submit a claim after hours, on the weekend or during a holiday, expect a delay in your claim’s processing.

How long does your coverage plan last?

Liberty Home Guard offers plans that, in most cases, last 12 months. For an annual premium, you can purchase a multiyear policy. When you purchase coverage, LHG won’t accept claims until the initial waiting period ends. This period lasts for 30 days after you sign up.

Like most home warranty companies, LHG provides a free cancellation period during which it will refund your entire policy premium if you cancel within the first 30 days of purchase. 

If you cancel after 30 days, LHG will refund a prorated amount based on the amount of time you held your policy. In addition, LHG charges a $50 cancellation fee.

How should you handle a dispute with Liberty Home Guard?

If you have a dispute with LHG regarding your most recent claim, you can take several actions to expedite the resolution process:

  1. Confirm your coverage details: Angel Conlin, chief insurance and compliance officer at Kin Insurance, recommends the following: “After a claim has been denied, your first step should be to review your home warranty coverage to verify that the reasons cited for the denial comply with your warranty provider’s coverage terms.”
  2. Contact Liberty Home Guard: Once you’ve reviewed your service contract and confirmed your malfunction is covered, contact LHG. We suggest contacting them at least three times before escalating the matter.
  3. Document everything: Each time you contact claims or customer service, get the name of the person you spoke to and the date and time of your interaction. If you contact LHG via email, save the email chain. These documents prove you attempted to resolve the issue if you need to escalate it to a higher authority.
  4. Contact a consumer protection agency: If LHG still refuses to cooperate after your third attempt at resolution, you should contact your state’s consumer protection agency. Your state’s attorney general’s office or insurance commissioner has a complaint form on its website.

After a claim has been denied, your first step should be to review your home warranty coverage to verify that the reasons cited for the denial comply with your warranty provider’s coverage terms.

Liberty Home Guard offers an extensive suite of additional coverage options other companies don’t provide — 42 items in total.
